چکیده

This paper deals with the biological aspects of the receptive field (RF) concept and its possible Cellular Neural Network (CNN) modeling. Three kinds of receptive field definitions are discussed: the experimentally measured RF, the mathematical model of the RF and its anatomical background. Recently, new RF-mapping techniques have revealed that neurons in the visual pathway exhibit striking RF dynamics [3], which implicates that for adequate characterization, the RF profile has to be examined in the space-time domain. Starting from these findings in the present study the neurons’ static RF definition is purified, and some experimental results of De Angelis et al. [3] is modeled by the CNN [1, 2]. Our CNN model indicates that the spatio-temporal RF dynamics can be generated by time invariant synaptic strength values.

Receptive Field Encoding Model for Dynamic Natural Vision

Introduction: Encoding models are used to predict human brain activity in response to sensory stimuli. The purpose of these models is to explain how sensory information represent in the brain. Convolutional neural networks trained by images are capable of encoding magnetic resonance imaging data of humans viewing natural images. Considering the hemodynamic response function, these networks are ...

Neural system identification for large populations separating "what" and "where"

Neuroscientists classify neurons into different types that perform similar computations at different locations in the visual field. Traditional methods for neural system identification do not capitalize on this separation of “what” and “where”. Learning deep convolutional feature spaces that are shared among many neurons provides an exciting path forward, but the architectural design needs to a...

Population Receptive Field Dynamics in Human Visual Cortex

Seminal work in the early nineties revealed that the visual receptive field of neurons in cat primary visual cortex can change in location and size when artificial scotomas are applied. Recent work now suggests that these single neuron receptive field dynamics also pertain to the neuronal population receptive field (pRF) that can be measured in humans with functional magnetic resonance imaging ...

Receptive-field dynamics in the central visual pathways.

Neurons in the central visual pathways process visual images within a localized region of space, and a restricted epoch of time. Although the receptive field (RF) of a visually responsive neuron is inherently a spatiotemporal entity, most studies have focused exclusively on spatial aspects of RF structure. Recently, however, the application of sophisticated RF-mapping techniques has enabled neu...

Effects of the Ganglion Cell Response Nonlinear Mapping on Visual System's Noise Filtering Characteristics

Up to the cortical simple cells there exist some good linear models of the visual system neurons’ dynamic receptive fields. These linear approximations are based on considerable amount of experimental evidences. Based on the linear approach, assumptions can be made about noise filtering characteristics of the early visual processing. Unfortunately, these notions, based primarily on power spectr...
